How Do You Prevent or Minimize Spider Veins

We all want to keep, to say the least, our skin healthy and beautiful. People we meet would make their fisrt impression on you basing on what they see – how you your skin looks like. Skin with marks and blemishes, will most likely give you a thumbs down in terms of looks. So it is natural that we do not want spider veins anywhwere in our skin, most especially, on our face. The best way to ensure that we are not plagued with the problem of spider veins is to prevent or somehow, minimize them from happening. Just like any case, preventing the spider veins to appear is by far easier than treating them once they are visible on the face and body.

Basically, it must be said that an unhealthy lifestyle is the one that causes a wide range of medical problems – which will for sure reflect on your skin. eating the wrong kinds of foods and lack of exercise can lead to various problems. So, if you want to stay away from spider veins, you need to chalk out an exercise plan that will keep you active, healthy and increase blood circulation. You can also add nutritious food to your list. Those foods containing a lot of fiber and vitamins. Fruits like apricot are rich in Vitamin A which, aside from being an antioxidant, keeps the youthful appearance of the skin. Foods rich in Vitamin C such as tomatoes strengthen the epithelial walls of your blood vessels and veins and so prevent emergence of spider veins.

Your diet should exclude salt as much as possible and it should include fruits and vegetables. Basically, the reason for a high fiber diet is to avoid constipation – based on the fact that constipation leads to the formation of spider veins.

Since spider veins are hereditary, and you know that your parents or siblings have spider veins, you must take an extra watch yourself and should be the person who has to take these preventive measures more seriously. Don’t wait until spider veins emerge, because if you don’t maintain healthy habits, spider veins will for sure surface eventually before you know it.

In addition, make sure that you are not standing for long stretches of time. Avoid crossing your legs and rest your legs after exercising. Wear clothes made of natural fabric and avoid tight, uncomfortable clothes that can restrict blood circulation.

If you have spider veins on your face, it is important for you to stay away from direct sunshine as much as possible, especially during 8 am til 3 pm where UV rays are at a surge. You should apply sunscreen lotions or creams and hats in order to make sure you don’t stress out your face and let the spider veins appear.

A Milder Surgical Procedure for Problematic Veins

In the previous article, we have mentioned about Ligation and Stripping as a surgical procedure in dealing with problematic veins, we are referring to the large ones like varicose veins. Spider veins, though they are smaller than varicose veins, cannot be isolated because the two basically have the same pathology. But of course, it does not mean that surgery should be used in spider veins, there are other conservative methods such as sclerotherapy. But you can be sure of this, since problematic veins are hereditary, it means that it is imprinted in the system of anyone who has a family history of it. So it follws that people who have spider veins can also have varicose veins as both are basically the same.

Below are the other two surgical methods for dealling with problematic veins.

The second way to surgically deal with problematic vein is called Ambulatory Phlebectomy (first one is ligation and stripping). On this type of surgery, a special light source marks the location of the vein. Tiny cuts are made in the skin, and surgical hooks pull the vein out of the leg. This surgery requires local or regional anesthesia. The vein usually is removed in one treatment. Very large varicose veins can be removed with this treatment while leaving only very minimal scars. Patients can return to activities of daily living the day after treatment.

The possible side effects include slight bruising and temporary numbness.

The third surgical option is Endoscopic vein surgery. On this this method, a very narrow probe with a very small video camera is used to see inside the veins. Then varicose veins are removed through small incisions. People who have this surgery must have some kind of anesthesia which may wither be spinal, epidural, or general anesthesia. Patients can return to activities of daily living after several weeks.

The Classic Treatment for Problematic Veins : Surgery (Ligation and Stripping)

When all else fails, we have to go back to the basic. Surgery is used mostly to deal on very large varicose veins. There are several types of surgery for varicose veins. But let us consider the commonly used surgical method. This would be the surgical Ligation and Stripping.

Now what is being done in surgical ligation and stripping. It may be what you think it is. As by basing on the name itself, you can have a clue. Surgical Ligation and Stripping effectively treats problematic veins first by tying and shutting them up – ligation. Then, these veins are surgically removed from the leg – stripping. Removing the veins does not affect the circulation of blood in the leg. Veins deeper in the leg take care of the larger volumes of blood. Most varicose veins removed by surgery are surface veins and collect blood only from the skin. This surgery requires either local or general anesthesia and must be done in an operating room on an outpatient basis.

What are the possible side effects? For you to know, there are serious side effects or problems from this surgery, but the likelihood of the occurrence are not common. Here are the problems that can possibly arise:

Ø      Because the procedure necessitates the use of a general anesthesia, a risk of heart and breathing problems may occur.

Ø      Damage of nerve tissue around the treated vein. It is hard to avoid harming small nerve branches when veins are removed. This damage can cause numbness, burning, or a change in sensation around the surgical scar.

Ø      Wound infection, inflammation, swelling and redness.

Ø      A deep vein blood clot. These clots can travel to the lungs and heart. Injections of heparin, a medicine that reduces blood clotting reduce the chance of these dangerous blood clots. But, heparin also can increase the normal amount of bleeding and bruising after surgery.

Ø      Bleeding and congestion of blood can be a problem. But the collected blood usually settles on its own and does not require any further treatment.

Ø      Permanent scars.

Ø      Pain in the leg and recovery time of one to four weeks depending on the extent of surgery is typical after surgery.

Laser Surgery and Endovenous Techniques as a Treatment Option for Spider Veins

The latest innovations in laser therapy can be a very good option to treat spider veins in the legs. The laser emits very strong bursts of light onto the vein. This can makes the vein slowly fade and disappear. Lasers are very direct and highly accurate. So the proper laser manipulation by a skilled surgeon will usually only damage the area being treated. Nomatter your skin color, you can be safely treated with lasers.
Laser surgery is highly favored by some patients because it does not use needles or incisions. But despite that, when the laser contacts the skin, the patient feels a “heavy” heat sensation that can feel like a dull sting. Cold compress helps reduce the pain. Laser treatments go for 15 to 20 minutes. Two to five treatments are generally needed to remove spider veins in the legs depending on the severity. Patients can return to normal activity right after treatment, just as with sclerotherapy. For spider veins larger than 3 millimeters, laser therapy is not a good choice.
And yes, like all other medical treatments, there are possible side effects. Here are those:
 Redness or swelling of the skin right after the treatment that disappears within a few days.
 Discolored skin that will disappear within one to two months.
 Rarely burns and scars result from poorly performed laser surgery.
Another method for treating spider veins and the like is with the use of Endovenous Techniques (radiofrequency and laser). As the name suggests, it is actually a method where an entry into the vein is necessary. These methods for treating the deeper varicose veins of the legs, the saphenous veins, have been a huge innovation. They have replaced surgery for the vast majority of patients with severe varicose veins. Laser therapy is not very invasive and can be done in a doctor’s office.
The surgeon inserts a very small tube called a catheter into the vein. Once it is in there, the catheter sends out radiofrequency or laser energy that shrinks and seals the vein wall. Healthy veins around the closed vein restore the normal flow of blood. As this happens, symptoms from the varicose vein improve. Veins on the surface of the skin that are connected to the treated varicose vein will also usually shrink after the therapy. Upon the doctor’s discretion, these connected varicose veins can be treated with sclerotherapy or other methods. A few days after the surgery, you may expect a hematoma or commonly called a bruise as side effect. This will disappear in less than a week.
